Gears of War 3 will “embrace the shotgun” according to lead designer Cliff Bleszinski. Cliff explains why in an interview with MeriStation TV.

We always try to push for the fact that this is a tactical cover-based shooter.  And the more you try to push a game as tactical the more gamers push back and make it into an arcadey type game.  So think about games like Counter-Strike and Call of Duty.  People try to say they’re tactical but they are very fast paced and very arcadey games.  But that’s cool. That makes it very accessible.

It looks like, Epic will allow users to use the shotgun as much as they want and they are also introducing a sawed off double-barrel shotgun.  The new double-barrel shotgun is extremely powerful but has a short range and longer reload time.  However, gamers will be able to “gib” a few enemies at once if they get the enemies lined up in close.

Check the video out. Cliff Bleszinski from Epic Games on Jimmy Fallon with the debut trailer for Gears of War 3…The new trailer premiered on Fallon’s show is called “Ashes to Ashes” and, in Bleszinski’s words, “outlines the world you’re going to see in Gears of War 3.”

The clip starts on a ruined urban setting, with ash raining down on frozen figures turned to ash in the midst of trying to escape the city. A grizzled COG soldier runs through the ruins, darting past the still, grey figures. He bashes through one as bullets impact on the ground new him. He falls and turns to us and we see it’s Dom. Just then a Locust soldier approaches. Just before he fires, a gunshot rings out from off screen and the Locust falls to the ground dead. Marcus Phoenix walks in from the right.

The camera shifts to a large firefight between the Locusts and COG. A female soldier who looks a lot like Anya walks up and hands Dom a rifle. The action cuts back to the Locusts just as they’re attacked by a massive, tentacled Lambit. Bleszinski calls them “Crazy tentacle monsters that can mutate while you’re fighting them.”

The COG soldiers are making a final stand, taking out the remaining Locust and holding strong as the Lambit approaches. The trailer fades to black and the words “Brothers to the end” appear on the screen.

Bleszinski also confirmed that double barrel shotguns and female soldiers will be in the new game and announced that the game is currently scheduled for release on April 8, 2011. Its now offical folks!!! I got three words for you Gears of War Addicts… LETS DO THIS!!!!

The big reveal of Gears of War 3 that was planned to debut on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon was spoiled when Microsoft slipped up and the Xbox Live dashboard confirmed the title’s release for April 2011, but it appears there is another announcement planned for that night as well. Cliff Bleszinski announced he has “two announcements about two upcoming games” for his Late Night appearance this Monday, April 12.

I wonder what the other game could be? Shadow Complex 2? or could it be unannounced project from Epic-owned studio People Can Fly. Publisher Electronic Arts revealed during its latest fiscal update the title will be released in early 2011. I guess we will find out Monday.

Well it appears that the rumors of Gears of War 3 and an announcement from Epic Games’ Cliff Bleszinski have turned out to be true. It looks like we’ll have the next Gears of War (and final chapter) this time next year. It appeared on the Xbox 360 dashboard today. The announcement (which has been deleted) confirmed the game for an April 2011 release.

The Gears of War 3 announcement mostly serves as official acknowledgment for what we already know; that Gears of War 3 exists and that it’s launching April 2011. This announcement was more than likely set to go live following Cliff Bleszinski’s appearance on Jimmy Fallon, but the timing was never reset after he was bumped by Justin Bieber.

Bleszinski is set to appear on Jimmy Fallon’s show this Monday, so we’ll likely get our first real look at Gears of War 3 then. Until then, consider this one confirmed.

Edge is at it again… It appears that new gameplay details have emerged for Gears of War 3, according to Edge magazine’s “trusted source.”  This is the same source that accurately predicted Epic Games would be revealing a new Gears of War trailer on April 8. That date has since been moved to Monday, April 12. 

According to the source, Gears of War 3 will include all-new Locust enemies the feature “tentacle-like appendages” that can extend to cover spots. To combat this, Delta Squad COG members will now carry explosives that can travel underground and take out enemy positions.

Gears of War 3 will also have “a heavy duty mech suit” that COG members can use for both protection and causing havoc on the battlefield. These new combat mechanics will be used in both singleplayer and multiplayer, according to Edge. Gears of War 3 will be set during the summer, and include a host of new locations as well. The biggest addition are new underwater levels.

In response to Edge’s report, Microsoft says “We don’t comment on rumors or speculation.”

For those waiting to see tomorrow night’s Cliff Bleszinski game reveal on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, I hate to break it to you, but its not happening…. on thursday.

Fallon producer Gavin Purcell has confirmed via Twitter that Bleszinski appearance on the show has been shifted to Monday due to scheduling conflicts. Looking at the updated Fallon schedule reveals that in Bleszinski’s place teenage singing sensation Justin Bieber is to appear. So it looks like we’ll have to wait a few extra days for the big reveal of what is hoped to be Gears of War 3.

Update: It appears the reason for the delay was due to developer Epic Games needing more time to put the finishing touches on its new, unannounced game for the big reveal.

“The truth of the matter is that we wanted to take a couple more days to polish what we’re showing,” Bleszinski wrote on his twitter account. “Sorry all, appreciate your patience!”

A recent video posted on Xbox Live shows Cliff Bleszinski taking you on a tour of the epic games facility. The reporter asks him Various questions and his answers hint around at Gears 3? He says such things as “I can confirm we have multiple unannounced products right now”, and the one thing that gives a big hint is when Cliff says sarcastically “Why would we make a sequel to a game that sold millions” Hmm.. Could he be revealing Gears 3 on Jimmy Fallon on Thursday? We’ll find out.
